A/Prof. Gunisha Kaur

Professor of Anesthesiology, and Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights

Dr. Kaur is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, a Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights, and the Founding Director of the Human Rights Impact Lab. Her family came to the United States to seek refuge in the 1980s, and she has dedicated her career as a physician-scientist to advancing the health of forcibly displaced and traumatized people such as refugees and asylum seekers. She has used her extensive background in neuroscience research as an analytical framework to pioneer the study of human rights through scientific methodology. Her research has been supported by several funders including the National Institutes of Health, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and Cornell University.

Prof. Jennifer Weller

Head of the Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education, University of Auckland

Jennifer Weller is a Professor of Medical Education in the School of Medicine at the University of Auckland. She has many years’ experience as an anaesthetist in Adelaide, the UK and New Zealand.

Her research is translational – working with clinical colleagues and trainees, ANZCA and NZ health services, to create empirical evidence to support implementation of competency based medical education, and simulation-based education. She leads a national programme, NetworkZ, for multidisciplinary simulation-based team training for operating room and emergency department staff.

Professor Weller is Head of the Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education in the Auckland School of Medicine. She is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. She chairs the ANZCA Education, Development and Evaluation Committee and is the founding chair of the Professional Practice Research Network Subcommittee of the ANZCA Research Committee.

Prof. Robert Hahn

Robert Hahn was as a full-time clinical anaesthetist between 1979 and 1993 and then turned to academics as professor of anaesthesia and intensive care at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. From 2007 he was appointed Chief of Research and Development at Södertälje Hospital while holding several university positions as associate professor and professor in Sweden and Latvia.

 Professor Hahn´s favourite topics have been physiology in anaesthesia, monitoring of fluid overload in transurethral surgery and kinetic modelling of infusion fluids. With a methodological interest, his current research includes the development and evaluation of clinically useful methods of monitoring fluid therapy and the detection of preoperative dehydration.

Robert Hahn has supervised 25 PhD programs and authored more than 350 scientific papers. He has edited two books about fluid therapy, the most recent being “Clinical Fluid Therapy in the Perioperative Setting” (2nd Ed. Cambridge University Press, 2016; 3rd Ed. 2023) with contributions from 20 prominent international experts.

Dr. Vanessa Beavis

Immediate Past President of Australian New Zealand College of Anaesthetists

Vanessa is the Immediate Past President of ANZCA, having just completed her two year term as President.

She is a specialist anaesthetist at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand. and is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Department of Anaesthesiology at Auckland University. She is a liver transplant anaesthetist and while not doing that, is focussed in improving the perioperative outcomes for patients.

During her time on college council, Vanessa has contributed to a wide range of college activities including as an examiner for the final fellowship exams, chair of the CPD committee, chair of the training and accreditation committee, founding chair of the Leadership and Management special interest group and the founding chair of the Perioperative Medicine special interest group. She was the inaugural chair of the Perioperative Medicine Steering Committee, tasked with (amongst other things), the development of the ANZCA Diploma of Perioperative medicine.

She is going to speak to us today on ANZCA’s progress in developing perioperative medicine training.

Prof. Elizabeth Malinzak

Professor at Duke University and Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Anesthesiology

Dr. Elizabeth Malinzak is a pediatric anesthesiologist and Associate Professor at Duke University, where she serves as the Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Anesthesiology.  She attended medical school and residency at Duke University and pursued a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at the University of North Carolina.  Dr. Malinzak’s academic interests include medical education and simulation, social media, leadership development, gender equity, and advocacy for young physicians. As such, she is the Past-President of Women in Anesthesiology, a board examiner and question author for the American Board of Anesthesiology, and a previous Chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Committee on Young Physicians.  Her advocacy for women anesthesiologists and young physicians has culminated in the adoption of ASA Statement on Personal Leave and ASA Statement on Lactation.  

Prof. Ramani Moonesinghe

Professor of Perioperative Medicine, University College London Director of the Health Services Research Centre, Royal College of Anaesthetists

Ramani is Professor of Perioperative Medicine at UCL and Honorary consultant in anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care medicine at UCL Hospitals. She holds several national leadership roles including as National Clinical Director for Critical and Perioperative Care at NHS England and NHS Improvement, and Director of the Health Services Research Centre at the Royal College of Anaesthetists. She was previously a Council member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (four years) and advisor on academic training to the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (seven years). Her research focuses on evaluating novel technologies and pathways, risk prediction and outcome measurement, and improvement studies focusing on perioperative and critical care. Although her research is predominantly UK based, she is also involved with projects internationally, including several in low and middle income settings. Studies which she leads have recruited more than 80,000 participants to the NIHR portfolio, and she has received grant funding from NIHR, Welcome and the Health Foundation. Her work based at UCL includes setting strategic direction for the Centre for Perioperative Medicine and the Research Dept for Targeted Intervention, and supporting her own research group which currently includes 13 doctoral students. In her role for NHS England and NHS Improvement, she has been the senior clinical advisor supporting the critical care response to COVID19, involving a broad scope of work including procurement, workforce, clinical practice guidelines, research, innovation, and quality. She continues clinical strategic leadership for critical care, and also for the perioperative / anaesthesia aspect of the recovery of elective services. She was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2021 Queen’s New Year’s Honours for service to anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care.

Prof. Hilary Grocott

Dr. Grocott completed medical school at the University of Saskatchewan in 1990, and after finishing an anesthesia residency at the University of Manitoba in 1995, he went on to complete a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at Duke University where he later joined the faculty, advancing to tenured professor in 2006.

In 2007, he moved to the University of Manitoba where he currently serves as professor (with tenure) in the departments of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, and surgery. He is the former editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters on a range of topics related to cerebral and other perioperative outcomes after cardiac surgery.

André Denault is an academic-physician with special interests in ultrasound. His medical qualifications and specialties include internal medicine (1991), critical care medicine (1993) and anesthesia (1996). In 2010 he completed a PhD in biomedical Science at the University of Montreal. He has advanced certification in National Board in Echocardiography (NBE) in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography and critical care ultrasound. Dr Denault has written 340 peer-reviewed articles, 60 book chapters and 3 textbooks on perioperative transesophageal and critical care ultrasound. He has been invited as speaker in local, national and international meeting. He won several teaching awards including the Canadian Anesthesia Research Award in 2022. He currently works as a cardiac anesthesiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute. He is the director of research in the department of Anesthesia and the whole-body ultrasound fellowship at the University of Montreal. Major interest includes right ventricular function, venous congestion, brain and somatic oximetry and bedside whole-body ultrasound.

Prof. Javier Fernandez

Professor Fernandez is Chairman of Anesthesia and Critical Care Department, Puerta de Hierro University Hospital, Madrid, Spain. The hospital has >600 beds, 22 operating rooms, 52 medical-surgical intensive care beds, and a medical-surgical ambulatory clinic with 60 beds. Professor Fenandez has clinical and academic interests in ventilation strategies in adult and paediatric patients. Professor Fernandez is internationally recognised for his education and lectures on best practice for mechanical ventilation during neonatal and paediatric anaesthesia. He is Associate Editor for “Ibero-american Journal of Non-invasive Ventilation” and ”Current Anesthesiology and Resuscitation” and serves as president of the research and ethics committee of Puerta de Hierro Hospital, in Spain.

A/Prof. Jai Darvall

Associate Professor Jai Darvall is an anaesthetist and intensive care specialist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is co-lead of the perioperative medicine service within the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management. He holds dual appointments at the University of Melbourne in the Departments of Critical Care and Medical Education, where he is responsible for anaesthetic and intensive care medical student teaching at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Jai has clinical and research interests in frailty, perioperative medicine, and persistent critical illness. His research program aims to improve outcomes for older patients with critical illness or undergoing surgery, particularly those living with frailty. In addition to his primary research interests, he is a Chief Investigator for various ANZCA Clinical Trials Network endorsed studies, including the Chewy Trial (evaluating a novel therapy for postoperative nausea and vomiting) and the SNAPP Trial (investigating optimal neuromuscular blockade reversal for postoperative pulmonary complications).

Dr. Julia Dubowitz

Julia is a clinical and research anaesthetist with an interest in perioperative medicine and oncologic anaesthesia. Julia completed her fellowship training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre where she now works as a specialist anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Research within the Department of Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.

Julia completed a PhD (Monash University, 2021) investigating the role of anaesthesia in improving long-term outcomes for patients undergoing cancer surgery. Her post-doctoral research continues to focus on interventions in the perioperative period (around the time of surgery) to improve patient recovery and long-term cancer outcomes. She collaborates with clinicians and scientists at a local, national, and international level. She is the principal and national investigator on several clinical trials, has published over ten peer-review publications, been awarded numerous research grants, and supervises junior doctors undertaking research projects in clinical anaesthesia.

A/Prof Lachlan Miles

A/Prof. Lachlan Miles has been a consultant anaesthetist in full-time public practice at Austin Health since 2016. After graduating from medical school at Monash University with first class honours in 2007, Lachlan completed his basic and advanced anaesthetic training at The Alfred in Melbourne, a subsequent provisional fellowship at the Austin Hospital in cardiac, hepatobiliary and liver transplant anaesthesia, and a further clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom.

Lachlan’s specialist interests largely concern the management of the critically ill surgical patient, before, during and after their operation. He is an active participant in the peri-operative medicine, cardiac surgery, and liver transplant programs at Austin Health, and has undergone further training in advanced perioperative trans-oeosophageal echocardiography. He holds certification status with the National Board of Echocardiography in the United States (AdvPTEeXAM).

Director and Chief Executive of Royal Botanic Gardens

Professor Tim Entwisle is an author, botanist and botanic gardens director. He was Director and Chief Executive of Royal Botanic Gardens from 2013 to 2023, following two years in a senior role at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and eight years as Executive Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust in Sydney. Tim is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne and expert in freshwater algae, with a broad interest in plants and public gardens. Tim is a regular contributor to Australian radio and writes for science, nature and garden magazines. He is active on social media – including a weekly blog (talkingplants.blogspot.com) – and recently published a memoir, Evergreen: the Botanical Life of a Plant Punk
